Bensulfuron-methyl is a selective herbicide used primarily in rice cultivation to control a wide range of broadleaf weeds and sedges. It belongs to the sulfonylurea class of herbicides, which work by inhibiting the acetolactate synthase (ALS) enzyme, also known as acetohydroxyacid synthase (AHAS). This enzyme is crucial for the synthesis of branched-chain amino acids, such as valine, leucine, and isoleucine, in plants. When ALS is inhibited, the production of these essential amino acids is halted, leading to the disruption of protein synthesis and eventually causing plant death. Bensulfuron-methyl is absorbed primarily through the roots and foliage, with symptoms including stunted growth, chlorosis, and necrosis. Its selective nature allows it to target weeds without harming the rice crop, making it a valuable tool for effective weed management in paddy fields.
