Bacillus thuringiensis products is utilized as a microbial-based, low-toxicity insecticide, primarily acting through stomach poisoning. The bacterium produces two major types of toxins: endotoxins (including parasporal crystals) and exotoxins.
What Does Bacillus Thuringiensis Do？
The bacterium produces two major types of toxins: endotoxins (including parasporal crystals) and exotoxins. These toxins cause pests to cease feeding, leading to starvation, cell wall rupture, hemolysis, and neurotoxicity, ultimately resulting in pest mortality. Exotoxins exhibit slow action, with pronounced effects during molting and metamorphosis, which coincide with the peak period of RNA synthesis. They inhibit RNA polymerase dependent on DNA during these periods. The action of this pesticide is gradual, with visible effects approximately two days after pest ingestion, and a duration of about one day. Therefore, it should be applied 2-3 days in advance compared to conventional chemical agents, with better efficacy observed during the early stages of pest development. It is safe for fish and bees but highly toxic to silkworms.
