What Does Bacillus Thuringiensis Do？

The bacterium produces two main types of toxins: endotoxins (including parasporal crystals) and exotoxins. These toxins cause pests to stop feeding, which leads to starvation, cell wall rupture, hemolysis, and neurotoxicity, eventually resulting in the death of the pests. While exotoxins act more slowly, their effects become more pronounced during molting and metamorphosis—times when RNA synthesis reaches its peak. During these stages, exotoxins inhibit DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, interfering with vital biological processes. The pesticide works gradually, and visible effects appear approximately two days after pests ingest it, lasting for about one day. Therefore, it is recommended to apply it 2-3 days earlier than conventional chemical agents, with the best results seen in the early developmental stages of pests. Furthermore, it is safe for fish and bees but highly toxic to silkworms.
